The ninth structural level of the spine contributes the rung
R10 = P1· P3, the first interior point whose
two coordinates are the duality axis and the time axis. It is
the smallest rung on which a binary decision and a temporal
coordinate appear simultaneously, and it is therefore the
first rung at which a decision can be irreversible:
the first rung on which “before the decision” and “after
the decision” are distinct configurations of the same
object. The level is centered on Oppenheimer, whose work made
an irreversible decision real in the world and whose later
life was the inhabited form of what “I am become Death”
means as a structural statement.
1Standing on Oppenheimer's shouldersThe ninth structural level of the spine is centered on
Oppenheimer because Oppenheimer lived the structural content
of this rung rather than proving it. The rung is the first on
which duality meets time: the first rung at which a yes-no
decision carries a before and an after. Oppenheimer's role in
the Manhattan Project was the role of a man standing at
exactly this rung: a decision had to be made, the decision was
binary, and the decision was irreversible. The decision was
taken, and the taking was irreversible, and the irreversibility
was the content.The line he quoted in the aftermath — “now I am become
Death, the destroyer of worlds” — reads, in the framework,
as a structural statement about an irreversible binary decision
whose consequences exit the frame of the decider. The phrase
“become” is a time-marker: it is the after-state of a
transition whose before-state was someone else. The framework
is not interested in the theology or the ethics of the line;
it is interested in the arithmetic shape of the moment, and
the shape is exactly P1· P3: duality multiplied by
time, the first interior point of the duality-time plane.Oppenheimer was honored and then shunned. He was the head of
the project and then, less than a decade later, stripped of
his security clearance by a hearing whose substance was that
he had expressed doubt about a subsequent binary decision. The
pattern — honored for the first irreversibility, punished
for hesitating at the second — is the pattern of a man
living on a rung where decisions cannot be unmade. The
framework places him here because this is the rung where that

Oppenheimer belongs to the second kind. His structural
contribution is that he showed, in a form that cannot be
ignored, what it looks like to stand at a rung where duality

levels 1 (Tesla, duality, P1 = 2) and 4 (Bergson, time,
