The work of becoming a teacher was exhausting and exhilarating in equal measure.Tonight, they'd been preparing a lesson on Socratic questioning. How do you teach students to think critically? How do you draw out understanding rather than pour in information?Sleep came quickly. And with it, the dream.Alex stands in bright Mediterranean sunlight.Stone buildings rise around a central marketplace. People in togas and chitons move through the space—buying, selling, arguing, laughing. The air smells of olive oil and bread and dust.This is Athens. Ancient Athens.And there, beneath a colonnade, a cluster of people gathered in a circle. At the center, an older man with a beard, barefoot, plain robes. His face is animated, questioning, alive.Socrates.Alex's heart races. This is it—the source, the beginning. The first teacher who asked questions instead of giving answers.Alex moves closer, drawn like iron to a magnet. The circle of listeners parts slightly. Alex can see them now: young men, mostly, listening intently. One of them, barely twenty, sits cross-legged on the ground, utterly absorbed.Young Plato.Socrates gestures, asking something. The students respond, debate, question back. The dialogue flows like music—call and response, thesis and antithesis, question and deeper question.And Alex understands... nothing.SOCRATES: Τί ἐστιν ἀρετή;What is virtue?But Alex doesn't know that. The words are beautiful sounds, utterly opaque.STUDENT 1: Ἡ ἀρετή ἐστιν...More beautiful sounds. More incomprehensible meaning.Alex reaches out as if to touch the moment, to enter the circle, to participate in this dialogue that changed the world.But the language barrier is absolute. Impenetrable.Alex stands outside the circle, looking in, understanding nothing.
